Welcome to Klinker Brick Winery,
Award-winning producer of Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi.
Great wine begins with a suitable climate and soil, both of which are found in Lodi. Sandy Loam soil coupled with the hot, cold exchange that graces Lodi from day to night creates a utopic environment to cultivate warm-weather varietals including Zinfandel, Cabernet and Syrah. A certain level of skill, attention to detail and harvest accuracy is required from the vintner as well. What once began as a grape-growing community from the early 1900's until the late 1980's, Lodi is now a thriving wine-producing region adorned with dozens of wineries, including Klinker Brick.
Why The Name Klinker Brick?
The Historical Brick of the 1920's
We are often asked why we named our winery, Klinker Brick. Klinker Bricks are highly prized bricks that grace many of the historical buildings in Lodi, including our home. Chosen by Craftsmen architects in the 1920’s for their distinctive qualities, including unique shapes and dark, rich color, they are denser and heavier in weight than regular bricks. “Klinker” refers to the unusual sound that they make when banged together, because of their density. Rich, deep color, enormous density, unique and distinctive features are the same qualities found in our Old Vine Zinfandel and Farrah Syrah. And, we hope it is a name that you are not likely to forget!
Our Pride - Our Old Vine Zinfandel
The Felten Family own and manage fifteen individual vineyard blocks of “Old Vine” Zinfandel that range in age from 40 to 120 years old. Each vineyard is planted in sandy loam soils in the Mokelumne River Appellation of Lodi and the Clements Foothills.
In the nineties, the family began to market their zinfandel in the bulk wine market, selling to a number of prestigious, benchmark producers of Zinfandel in Napa and Sonoma Counties.
In 2000, Steve and Lori produced their first vintage of Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel. They continue to produce wine from all of the vineyard blocks, culling only the very best lots for bottling Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel and designated vineyard wines. They produced their first vintage of Farrah Syrah in 2001.
The Feltens and Klinker Brick have one goal…produce world-class wine.
Steve and Lori Felten, Owners
Steve and Lori represent the fifth generation of their family to grow grapes in Lodi. Warm and friendly, with a passion for producing exceptional wine, they view themselves as stewards of the land and their ancient vines. In addition to their own property, they manage a number of vineyards in the region with the goal of producing incredible fruit. They started Klinker Brick Winery and produced their first vintage of old vine zinfandel in 2000.
Joseph Smith, Winemaker
Joseph joined Klinker Brick in 2008 after starting his career in the nineties as an apprentice with Gnekow Family Wines. From there he worked under Barry Gnekow at Hahn and also Michael David as a cellar master and ultimately our full time winemaker. Joseph has been producing wines of exceptional quality for Klinker Brick.
Christopher Rivera, Assistant Winemaker
Chris grew up in Modesto, Ca. He attended the University of the Pacific and received a bachelor’s degree in Sports Science. After working in the physical therapy field Chris decided to further his education. He began working at a local winery learning the basics of wine production. Realizing he enjoyed the craft of making wine, he made the decision to change direction in his career path. When the opportunity arose to work under the direction of Klinker Brick's winemaker, Joseph Smith, Chris accepted the position of assistant cellar master.
Barry Gnekow, Winemaking Consultant
Barry has been our wine consultant from the inaugural vintage of Klinker Brick. A University of California, Davis, graduate with over 30 years of experience in winemaking, has been a great asset to the winery, producing wines of distinction, year after year, for Klinker Brick.
Charred oak aromas and flavors are paramount in this assertive, bold and tannic wine. By themselves the smoky, peppery aspects would make for a one-dimensional wine, but this one adds substantive, rich, blackberry-like fruit flavors underneath. The firm tannins call for pairing with a rib-eye steak or barbecue.
